What are Orthotics?

Treatment often involves the prescription of foot orthoses to help support the feet or encourage better function for improved comfort. Bespoke orthoses are custom made to your feet and your personal requirements. A 3-dimensional scan is taken of your feet and the orthoses are then manufactured using high performance materials for maximum control and comfort. Semi-bespoke and prefabricated orthoses are also available and David will advise you which option is best suited to your specific requirements.

David Owens BSc (Hons) MSc MCPod. HCPC Registered Podiatrist (Musculoskeletal)

I completed my podiatry training at Cardiff Metropolitan University in 2009, and initially worked in private practice before joining Solent NHS Trust, where I developed skills in the prevention of diabetic foot disease. Since 2013, I have been based at Total Foot Health in Salisbury, a multi-disciplinary podiatry practice, where I provide a range of services including; local anaesthetic and minor surgery, and treatment of musculoskeletal (muscle and bone) disorders of the foot and ankle. I have continued post-graduate study, and in 2017 I was awarded a Master of Science degree in podiatry from the University of Brighton.

In 2018, I joined Glencairn House as the Musculoskeletal Podiatrist with a primary focus on assessing and treating musculoskeletal problems within the foot and ankle. I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council and a full member of the College of Podiatry. I am a gentle but thorough clinician and I aim to provide the highest level of care to my patients through a patient centred approach. I look forward to meeting you in clinic and helping you to resolve the foot related problem that is affecting the activities you enjoy.

Your assessment and treatment

I will first talk with you to understand your problem and how it is affecting the activities you enjoy. I will ask you about your medical history, past injuries, as well as your activities. This is followed by an examination of your lower limbs on a couch, standing, and walking. Please bring a pair of shorts or loose trousers that can be rolled above the knees. I normally take a short video only of your feet and legs when walking to help with diagnosis, however this is not essential. I would be grateful if you could bring along 2 or 3 pairs of shoes you wear most often as well as any insoles you may have been given previously, so that I can see what has and has not worked. By the end of the assessment I will aim to give you a diagnosis and discuss a treatment plan with you.

Treatment may involve; foot orthoses (orthotics), stretching and strengthening exercises, gentle mobilisation techniques, or strapping of injured areas. If I find any issue with the muscles or joints above the ankle then I will normally refer you on to another member of the team at Glencairn House. By working as a multi-disciplinary team, we are able to give you the best chance of resolution of your problem.
